Binding 101: Tips for Safe, Comfortable, and Confident Chest Binding

Whether you're new to chest binding or just need a refresher (especially in the summer heat), we've got you. At FLAVNT, we’ve been creating gender-affirming binders for nearly a decade — and we know that safety, comfort, and confidence go hand-in-hand when it comes to binding.

Here are our top tips to help you bind safely and feel good while doing it:

🧷 1. Choose the Right Size

This one’s huge. Binding isn’t one-size-fits-all — and wearing something too tight can lead to serious discomfort or even long-term injury.

How to find your size:

  • Use a soft measuring tape around the widest part of your chest and under your bust.

  • Check our Bareskin Binder size chart here for the most accurate fit.

  • If you’re between sizes, go up — never down.

Reminder: Your goal is compression, not restriction. You should be able to breathe normally and move without pain.

🌬️ 2. Don’t Sleep in Your Binder

We get it — sometimes you feel most like yourself when you’re wearing your binder. But your body needs a break, especially overnight.

Wearing a binder for more than 8–10 hours a day or while sleeping increases your risk of bruising, muscle strain, or difficulty breathing. Trust us — resting your body is just as affirming as binding it.

☀️ 3. Stay Cool & Hydrated (Especially in Summer)

Binding in the heat is tough — and it’s extra important to take care of yourself when the temps rise.

  • Stick to breathable materials (like our Bareskin blend)

  • Take binder breaks in front of a fan or in private spaces

  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

  • Consider wearing a thin moisture-wicking layer under your binder to help reduce skin irritation

🧼 4. Wash Your Binder (and Give It a Break)

Just like any garment, your binder needs some TLC to last longer and stay clean.

  • Hand wash or machine wash on delicate in cold water

  • Air dry flat (avoid high heat)

  • Have at least two binders if possible so you can rotate them and give each one time to rest

❤️ 5. Listen to Your Body

If you’re feeling dizzy, short of breath, sore, or stiff, take your binder off.
You’re not “less valid” if you need a break. There’s no right way to bind — only what works for you.

And if binding ever causes lasting pain or discomfort, talk to a doctor or trans-competent health provider when you can. You deserve to feel good and safe in your skin.
