On Wednesdays we want to bring y'all's attention to things that we love, whether that be other small businesses, queer projects, the latest movie we've seen and reviewed, or whatever we feel like you guys would like to hear/should know about. For our second "We Love" we want to talk about a small queer business that you might have seen written about on places like Huffington Post in the past year.
Butchbaby & Co. is a self-described "alternity" brand -- offering maternity clothes for people with more masculine appearances who still want to experience carrying a child.
We love the initiative they've taken to fill a niche needing something within the community that was often overlooked, and we LOVE the creativity they've put into their brand. (C'mon, a "butchbaby shower" as a fundraiser, how clever is that??)
We love to shine the spotlight on other business, especially queer-run businesses -- and even more so this a business run by queer women.
We have heard horror stories of butch friends traumatized by their experiences during pregnancy, not feeling at ease in their bodies, and just feeling out of their element. Maybe if they had had something like Butchbaby to wear during their nine months they could have found a little solace.
Personally this hits home for our duo because Courtney as a more masculine-of-center lesbian has always joked "How could I ever be pregnant? What am I supposed to wear for 9 months -- only sweatpants??!" Maternity wear in general is targeted towards a certain demographic (a demographic which does not typically include more masculine or genderqueer people) and there is definitely a need for a brand like this one. Not only does Butchbaby plan to provide an option for the less femme pregnant people of the world, but they allow for these people to remain style conscious and not have to sacrifice their daily swag just because of the tiny human growing inside of them. Now pregnancy doesn't have to mean 9 months of bad outfit days and overalls -- there's hope!
They are looking to launch their store in the coming months, so keep an eye out on their site at http://butchbabyco.tumblr.com/ !
